The Canadian trade authorities recently announced the implementation of temporary safeguard measures on certain imported wooden cabinets and bathroom vanity sets. According to the announcement issued by the Canadian Minister of Finance and National Income on July 31, 2026, an additional import duty of 25% will be applied to the value for duty of specific imported wooden cabinets and bathroom vanities. This provisional safeguard duty took effect on July 31, 2026, and will be applied for a maximum period of 200 days, expected to last until approximately mid-February 2027.
The scope of products subject to the measures includes cabinets and vanity cabinets made wholly or partly from wood, including solid wood, engineered wood, particleboard, fiberboard, plywood, and bamboo, for fixed installation, whether finished or unfinished, assembled or in flat-pack form. The United States, Mexico, Chile, Israel, and approximately 90 developing countries are included in the exemption list, while certain exporting countries such as Vietnam are not exempt. The Canadian International Trade Tribunal initiated a formal safeguard investigation in April 2026 and is expected to publish findings and recommendations for remedial measures before January 15, 2027.
